We hope the school year is off to a great start and your student is settling into the middle school routine. The PTSA would like to remind you that we will have our first PTSA Officer’s Meeting on Wednesday, September 11th at 8:30 am. (All are welcome to attend.) The front office will direct you to the appropriate meeting location.

Finally, remember that Culbreth Open House will be Thursday, September 12th from 6-8 pm, with the EC Open House starting at 5:30 pm.

Hello Culbreth families!

We hope you are having a fantastic summer. Your Culbreth PTSA is busy at work preparing for a great school year, and we want to remind you of a few happenings.

The Culbreth PTSA will again sell school supply kits for each grade level. This will benefit the school and allow you to enjoy your summer by getting your student’s school supplies with just a few clicks. Speaking of the PTSA….Now is a great time to join the PTSA for the 2019-2020 school year. The PTSA works hard all year to make sure that the students, teachers, and staff have the resources they need for a great learning environment. We can’t do this without your help!!

FINAL PTSA Meeting of the year

Hello Culbreth families!

As we approach the end of our school year (WOW!), we are also coming up on our FINAL PTSA meeting (scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th at 1:00 pm).  Your attendance would be greatly appreciated because we will be voting on the PTSA budget and our board of officers for next year.  Light refreshments will also be served to celebrate the conclusion of another excellent and highly productive year!

As a quick refresher, let me remind you about a few of the great things you have funded this year through your PTSA membership and donations:

  • Since August, we have funded almost $5,000 in Student Support and Enrichment.  These funds support students by funding items for our school nurse, family specialist, the AVID program, Science Day, the Reflections Art Contest and our 8th grade promotion reception.

  • The PTSA funds have supported over $2,000 of expenses associated with clubs, competitions, and performances (like Battle of the Books, the National Geography Bee, and the Band, Drama, and Orchestra competitions).

  • We also reimbursed over $5,000 in teacher discretionary funds for materials that directly impact your student’s day-to-day classroom experience.

  • Additionally, the PTSA funded over $5,000 in teacher-initiated grant requests (including things like a new refrigerator for Student Services to hold medications, reading materials to prevent the “summer slide” for students in our reading intervention classes, a school-wide performance for Black History Month, Morehead Planetarium’s mobile planetarium unit for our sixth grade science students, Art Room ceramic glazes, flexible seating for a math class, annotation black lights, and reading materials for a cross-country book club).

We have prepared two slightly different versions of the draft budget for next fiscal year.  VERSION 1 funds Hospitality events a little less so we can fund grants a little more.  VERSION 2 funds Hospitality a little more, so we put a little less into grants.  If you have a moment, please take a look and come prepared to vote on Tuesday, June 4th.  Thank you for your time, your interest, your donations and your talents---all in service to Culbreth’s PTSA, students, teachers and staff.

Meeting Announcement

Hi Culbreth families!  Mark your calendars now for the next PTSA meeting: Tuesday, March 5th at 1:00. We will meet in the Culbreth admin office conference room and would love for you to join us!  This month’s agenda (available HERE) is a little lighter which leaves plenty of time for questions and discussion. Knowing what’s on your mind will really help shape our budget conversations (which begin at the April meeting).   Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday!

A note from the PTSA President…

Greetings Culbreth families! Hope you’re surviving the weather whiplash we’ve been having. Welcome Spring! Back to Winter! And hello Spring again!

During all these weather changes, your PTSA has been hard at work. At our last meeting on February 5th, we reviewed and discussed several grant applications for our third of four review sessions. I am pleased to share the following grants that were approved for funding:

  • Sixth Grade Science Team: approved for $771 for a mobile planetarium visit from the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.

  • Jessica Kelly, French teacher: approved for $500 to support a professional development trip to France

  • Helen Motta, 8th grade ELA teacher: approved for $100 to support professional development--board renewal boot camp

  • Monica Bintz, Principal: approved for $1200 for “Bring the Beast to Culbreth” Black History Month celebration

  • Mr. Nedimeyer, Band teacher: $500 funded by Special Orchestra grant donation received last month

We’re so pleased to be able to support teachers and staff with funding for their classroom activities and professional endeavors. And thanks to your generous support at the beginning of the year during the membership drive, as well as your financial contributions throughout the year, we’re able to provide these wonderful opportunities for Culbreth staff and students!

Looking ahead, there are some things coming up on the calendar and I hope you will be involved. At the March PTSA meeting, we will review the budget and talk about volunteer opportunities. During the April meeting, we will discuss the draft budget for next fiscal year. And at the May meeting, we will finalize the budget and review our fourth and final round of grant proposals.
